Context
Recently Logitech released a new gaming product line, including a headset, mouse, and keyboard. Its new interchangeable peripheral design unlocked more customization potential, such as various personalized mod kits for the keyboard. As a UX design intern, I worked with an intern team to envision the device customization experience at both point-of-purchase and at ongoing phases.
Solution
I delivered a gaming gear and mod kit customization platform design vision based on the Logitech G shopping website to empower users to personalize their gaming devices.
My Final Design Deliverable
Key User Flow A. When a gamer wants to purchase a personalized gear on the Logitech G website...
Key User Flow B. When a gamer wants to purchase a mod kit to upgrade the look and feel of their gaming gear on the Logitech G website...
Process Highlight: Research
This is a large cross-disciplinary design project with all digital UX design part, industrial design/CMF part, and technology innovation part. The team worked together on the research, ideation, and concept experience journey definition phases. Then each intern worked on the concept output of their discipline individually during the design phase.
Research & Ideation. During the research phase, we gained insights into the gaming gear customization market, and gamer's expectations, frustrations and motivations about their gaming gear customization. The key research activities included contextual inquiries (11 Logitech gamers), market research, tech research, trend exploration, affinity mapping, persona. Based on research, we conducted a collective ideation session.
Process Highlight: Concept Journey
The team collectively designed a concept experience journey. We took the gaming keyboard as the product example. Here is the journey overview:
Our customization framework consists of three key experience moments. The first key experience moment is Gear customization during the device purchase on the Logitech G website.
Key Experience Moment II : Personalized mod kit creation for the gear customization upgrade.
Key Experience Moment III : Purchase your mod kit on the Logitech G website.
Process Highlight: Web UX Design
Based on the unified concept experience journey map, I started working on designing the customization platform based on Logitech gaming shopping website.
1. Sitemap Analysis & IA Mapping. I analyzed the site map of Logitech Gaming website to see where our customization webpages should be located, and I designed a information architecture map to figure out how many screens need to be designed.
2. UX Wireframes. I designed wireframes of two core user flows: The keyboard customization flow and the mod kit customization flow.
3. Usability Testing. After conducting user testing with 2 friends and 1 lead designers, I validated the design. And I got the feedback that the current multi-page interaction model can be simplified. Using single page interaction model is more intuitive.
5. High Fidelity UI
Takeaways
Contribute to the unified experience vision in a cross-functional team as a user experience designer
This is my first internship project and the project with the most design disciplines. During 3 month collaboration with industrial design intern, CMF intern, and creative technologist intern, I gained practical experience by learning a huge amount of multi-discipline knowledge. And I got a deep understanding that as a user experience designer, I can contribute more to providing a unified and clear experience north star vision by mapping user-centered and end-to-end experience journeys.
